#AtoZchallenge2021 and #AtoZchallenge2021Quilt: letter K

Every day during the whole month of April except Sundays, I write a post starting with each letter of the alphabet. This year my theme is, in the textile universe, about upcycling, recycling and repurposingLots of good easy DIY ideas!
And you can play too! See below.

K is for knife.
Well a craft cutting blade is not quite a knife, but I had trouble with the letter k!
A cutter that no longer has a blade can still have a second life. Here is one of them!

The envelope of the cutter allows you to make bias, with strips of fabric.
Hmm, I can hear the non-quilter's wondering what the bias is for...
Excellent question! Thank you for asking, I'll show you some works using bias.

Celtic pattern quilts use long bias strips for interlacing.

The stems of the flowers are often made with bias, as in the quilts of Frieda Anderson.

How do you upcycle an old or broken knife? Do you use a knife for something else than cutting? Do you make your own bias?

  1. Love the photo of Frieda Anderson's quilt.

  4. And bias binding is used a lot when sewing clothing. I can't say I've ever repurposed a cutter. I tend to buy new blades and reuse that way.

  5. You are right on point, we call that a "Craft Knife"! Interesting use of the empty knife sheath as a bias turner. Another good re-use idea for something you would normally just throw away!

  6. That's an innovative solution with the cutter

  8. I know bias. I know my mother always used bias tape, and I know when I sewed I didn't! Those quilts are both gorgeous.

  9. Frieda Anderson's quilt is fabulous. I've used bias tape but never made it myself.

  11. I remember using bias in an apron I made in home-ec class.

  12. I do none of these things, but I enjoy looking at the works of those who do. Again, I admire those who are crafty.

  13. I have seen those thingies that you can make bias tape with. Cool. I hadn't considered upcycling a knife before.

  14. The Celtic pattern with the bias is beautiful. I really like that one. Weekends In Maine

  15. I'm trying hard to find the German word for bias binding. Is it some sort of cuff? Can you tell sewing is not my strong suit? I'll leave it to people like you who know what they're doing ;-)

    1. I asked to my translator, and it says "Schlichten Vorspannung" for biais binding. I know very few words in German, so I can't tell you it's a good translation ;))

  17. Both of the quilts are beautiful, but I especially like the color scheme of the flowers...
