Every day during the whole month of April except Sundays, I write a post starting with each letter of the alphabet. This year my theme is, in the textile universe, about upcycling, recycling and repurposingLots of good easy DIY ideas!

U is for umbrella.
It's a pretty fragile object after all, and it's often the metal frame that breaks. What to do with a broken umbrella? No, no, don't throw it away 😉

The ribs of the umbrella are broken, but not all of them, and a part can be recovered? So here's something for your kids to enjoy, or yourself!

Ombrello the reusable is a curious sustainable design project. Two young Italian designers have rethought the life cycle of an umbrella, finding original ways to extend its life. The design of the canvas is made up of a series of patterns that allow - after dismantling the broken umbrella - to cut it up to quickly create new objects: gaiters, a bag, or a saddle cover for the bike.

The skirt I'm not so sure about but for younger kids the batman costume is great. I hadn't thought of making a bag but it is the perfect fabric for it.

Who knew even broken umbrellas are useful! That kid is super cute, though I love the wreath the best of all. :)
Ombrello the reusable is an interesting concept. I love the bat costume using the umbrella. That's so creative. Weekends In Maine

Ok, yet another thing I would have never thought to recycle! And it makes so much sense --- how many times has the wind blown your umbrella inside out and all you can think to do is chuck it in the trash? Love the bat costume, the hook racks and the tote bags!

Yet another great idea.

I like the handles as hangers. And, the beaded sticks are great! I like the idea of using them as plant stakes. I have to take a look at my broken patio umbrella (actually the fabric is rotted) and see if any parts are salvageable. The ribs are not thin like the stakes.

Hi,
Really like all your suggestions for re-using broken umbrella's. I
really like the deck umbrella suggestion. Have a great day!

These are all fabulously fun idea. I love the umbrella skirt. It may not be practical to sit in, but that's a minor inconvenience. And bat wings! I want those too.

Oooh, batwings. I wish I had seen that a couple years ago. I had a broken umbrella and a nephew at just the right age. Alas...

What great uses for an old umbrella! I think maybe the skirt would be a little hard to sit in but all the rest of them are terrific! The bat wings for a costume is brilliant!

I like the Ombrello project and the idea of a cover for a child's backpack.

Such an array of uses. The door bouquet is so pretty and could work for any door inside or out or even on a fence. The one with the pattern marked on it after its inevitable demise is a neat idea.

My mind is blown by all the ideas for how to reuse old umbrellas! I especially like the coat hooks.

These are such fantastic ideas. I love the bat costume. My daughter would love that.

These are just great -- and I really laughed at the skirt :-) In NYC, umbrella vendors pop up at the corner during rainstorms and you can quickly buy an umbrella if you need one. As a result, most of us have MANY umbrellas. You've given me great ideas for some of mine. https://mollyscanopy.com/2021/04/undaunted-seventh-blogiversary-atozchallenge/

These are fun! I have a number of broken umbrellas which I've been using anyway, but maybe now is the time to let them move on to another stage of life.
