It's a part you may not notice first...

Mug Rug Noera

but without it the quilt is not entirely done. The purpose of the binding is to frame the quilt, and hide the 3 layers on the edges: the top (patchwork), the batting, and the backing.

To combine useful and beautiful, several techniques are possible, according to the final effect desired. We speak then more generally about "edge finishes".

Double fold binding:
Also called French Fold Bias Binding, this is the most used and durable quilt binding. It is made from a double layer of quilting fabric using either the bias or straight of grain. The binding is sewn from the right side of the quilt, then folded and backstitched to the back.
See the tutorial and how to.

Single fold binding:
This type of binding, as the name suggest, covers the quilt's edges with a single layer of fabric. It can be made of either bias or straight grain strips. It's good for quilts that will be used lightly and washed infrequently, like wall quilts.

Both binding can be made by hand, or completely by machine.

Add some art and innovation to the binding!
Scraps from the quilt top, or from others, can be mixed with the binding.

Creating a binding that changes colors to match the quilt top:
This technique allow the eye to move across the quilt without interruption of color at the binding. The goal is to match the binding strip to the predominant color of the edge, changing it all along the quilt to match the next color.
This treatment is especially effective in modern quilts.

With words:
Add text to the binding itself before attaching it to the quilt.
Can be an alternative to the label.

With decorative stitches:
Instead of making the stitching as invisible as possible, why not attach bindings with machine embroidery stitches? Binding with a blanket stitch, or any decorative stitch.

Also known as a Flanged Binding, this technique uses two narrow complimentary fabric strips to make the binding strip. This method adds a little punch of colour and frames your quilt in style!

This quick and easy binding method, sometimes called Edge-turned Binding, protects the quilt's edges with just a single layer of fabric. For this method, the quilt's backing fabric is trimmed straight and wrapped around to the front of the quilt and stitched in place to form the binding.
Perfect method for table toppers, or mini quilts.

  • Finition bord à bord / Faced edge, or facing

Some quilts, especially art quilts, look much better without a binding showing. Instead the binding is folded entirely to the back as a facing. The quilt design simply stops at the edge.
Can add a nice professional and more artful looking finish.

  • Autres finitions des bords / Other edge finishes

Birthing a quilt:
This is a quick method for finishing a quilt's edges. A quilt backing is sewn with to the quilt top and batting with right sides together, leaving an opening on one side. The quilt is then turned and the opening slip stitched closed. Quilting can be added at this time. A great alternative for baby and art quilts.

Finishing with ric-rac:

Finition avec des picots :
Des petits triangles pliés, multicolores ou unis.

Finishing with Prairie Points:
Also called Sawtooth Edging, Dogtooth Borders or Cats' Ears, these small folded triangles are made from either strips of fabric or small square, scraps to finish a quilt's edges.

Bises
