I'm very very sad today, but let's go back to the A to Z Challenge: Notions.
Notions are small sewing supplies such as pins, scissors, rulers, seam ripper, and so on.


Pour quilter et faire du patchwork, il est possible de n'utiliser que des ciseaux, une aiguille et du fil. Mais il existe des outils qui facilitent grandement les choses.
For quilting, you could exclusively use scissors, a needle and thread. But some tools have been designed to make your life easier.

Quels outils sont essentiels en quilting ?
Which quilting tools are essential?


Pour commencer, il faut du tissu (100% coton de préférence), du fil en coton de bonne qualité, et du moleton.
For a start, you will need quilting fabric (100% cotton), quality cotton thread, and batting.

Pour les outils, ils peuvent être organisés en catégories :

I am very sad about the Notre Dame too. There are some positive reports coming out now, but watching it burn was devastating...

The structure may have not suffer to much, hope it will be ok... Fortunately some pieces of art could be moved away, but still, it's a patrimonial disaster

The entire world shares your sadness about Notre Dame. It is a huge loss for humanity. Glad that artworks and the organ are saved, from reports this morning. I personally want to know if the rose windows are okay, but can't find adequate confirmation.

I didn't know notions is the exact same word in French as well - how cool!

Thank you Nilanjana, we still don't know about the organ, nor the stained-glass windows. They may have suffered from the very high temperature. As well as the structure.
Notions is not a French word, sorry if it wasn't clear from my post. In French we will just say accessories, small items, nothing so short as Notions ;) Would have been cool indeed!

Good Morning Frédérique, We mourn the loss of Notre Dame with you. How terrible but I was happy to hear that many of the artifacts were saved this morning. It may be rebuilt but it will never be the same. {{Hugs}} Roseanne

I heard about the Notre Dome fire yesterday while running errands. It's sad to hear about historical sites damage but hopefully with proper repairs the catherdal will look good as before the fire.

I haven't done much sewing since junior high school. The only sewing projects I've done in recent years is making vintage style Christmas stockings. I always wanted to learn how to quilt, though. Maybe, someday I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing and happy a2zing!

I was watching the news yesterday as I was exercising and it was all about the fire - I couldn't take my eyes off of it hoping that the stain glass windows could be saved and the Crown of Thorns and it sounds like they saved some of the items - I hope the window will survive

I have been heartbroken over the Notre Dame fire. My visit there was a highlight of my trip to Paris. I am so grateful that at least some of the treasures have been saved.

I couldn't believe when I saw Notre Dame de Paris on the news yesterday. So very sad and hopeful at the same time. Hopeful because though it won't be the same, we will still have the monument after restoration...
I see the marking "pencil" here is different from the tailors chalk I use, and looks a lot easier to manipulate! I always learn something when I come to your blog, even though I don't quilt, I do sew!

Watching the cathedral burn was such a shock yesterday. I was coming home from a funeral when I heard the news on the radio and I didn't understand at first what was going on. Very sad.

Your post takes me back to my years taking French in college. Never really learned to speak the language just like I've never learned to quilt. At least I can understand a bit of French.

I have notions of scissors and other craft supplies for scrapbooking. I also watched and loved the first episode in Game of Thrones season 8. I have seen it 4 times already *sigh. I am sorry to hear about the Cathedral. They plan on rebuilding it though so. anyway.... Jackie's Bookbytes Letter N

The newspapers were full of Notre Dame news of the fire. I am finding the equipment of quilting rather interesting.I got hold of seam ripper and this small tool is so convenient to do small altering jobs.

Hi Karen, yes, the most beautiful windows survived. Some not, but they can be rebuilt. And a lot of art pieces were saved too.

Yes, this pencil is very conveniente, as it stays sharper than a piece of chalk. Sewing is a good start for quilting ;)

Learning a language in school is not really useful, if you do not practice, a lot, in immersion in the country. I will not say I write good English, but anyway, it's not because of the school ;)

Watched in total horror last evening on Notre Dame! Our hearts go out to all who adored it. There just aren't enough words are there?!
And it doesn't feel right talking about my favorite sewing notion so maybe another time. Prayers for all impacted by this tragic fire.

I always liked the term, "notions," very romantic sounding. It is incredibly sad about Notre Dame. My husband and I once had a 28 hour layover in Paris. We got to admire the cathedral from the outside, but didn't have time to go in. That is something I regret terribly. Most of my regrets are things I didn't give proper attention to while traveling. Ah, Frederique -- we share your sadness about the cathedral. I have been reading about "yellow vests" in France and critics abroad complaining about the money that will be spent rebuilding Notre Dame and how that money could be helping the poor instead. Yes, we should do more to help those are struggling, but the idea of NOT rebuilding Notre Dame is absolutely unthinkable. It would be like saying in the wake of 9-11 that rebuilding the World Trade Center and creating a memorial there is a waste of money. Yet the World Trade Center wasn't even 35 years old when it was destroyed. Eight hundred years of French history, culture, identity cannot be allowed to vanish in a puff of smoke. I look forward to seeing how the architects will handle the restoration -- I love the way France honors her history without being locked in the past, continuing to innovate and adapt architectural treasures to serve and reflect the sensibilities and needs of today and tomorrow as well as yesterday. (My new French word for today is le moleton = batting. :-). Merci!)

I inherited my great-grandmothers treadle sewing machine. It is still threaded with her spool of thread. There are a couple wound bobbins in the drawer.

Thank you Rebecca. There will always be protesters, that's the way French people is! There are a lot of tragedies in our country, poverty is one of them, and we donate a lot for all causes. But yes, Notre-Dame is special, and large sums of money are mentioned, and are mediated more than usual, and in an unusual way.

It was heartbreaking to see Notre Dame burning on our news channels. I was glad to read that while there was great damage sustained, that many of the relics and precious items were saved. I am glad that repairs are able to be made, but I am saddened that this beautiful historic building was damaged to begin with.
