Let's start slowly and easily this challenge!

Par la lettre A donc, pour ce 1er jour d'avril. A pour Appliqué (demain ce sera B !).

C'est la technique de l'appliqué à la main que j'ai utilisé en premier dans mes ouvrages textiles.

By the A letter then, for this first day of April. A for Appliqué (tomorrow will explore B!).

I used the hand appliqué technique for my first projects. Easy to start quilting!

Assez simple à mettre en oeuvre, il suffit de découper un motif et le coudre à petits points invisibles sur le tissu du fond de l'ouvrage. J'ai utilisé cette technique pour la tige et les feuilles de mon quilt North Carolina Lily :

Easy technique, Appliqué is done by taking a cutout design and sewing it to a background fabric, with tiny invisible stitches. The steams and leaves of the flower blocks of my North Carolina Lily quilt are done using this technique:

Appliqué inversé / Reverse appliqué

Vous avez peut-être déjà vu des molas, l'art textile des indiens Kuna du Panama, en appliqué inversé. Deux tissus sont superposés, et celui du dessus est coupé pour faire apparaître celui du dessous. Les bords du tissu du dessus sont rentrés et cousus à la main. Il y a souvent de nombreuses épaisseurs de tissus colorés.

Maybe you saw once molas, this textile art from the Kuna Indians from Panama. Reverse appliqué is achieved using two fabrics layered on top of each other. The applique shape is cut from the top fabric to reveal a second fabric underneath. The cut edges of the top fabric are turned under, while it is hand sewn to the bottom fabric. Many layers can be found on a mola.

Appliqué machine / machine appliqué

L'appliqué machine est plus rapide à faire que l'appliqué traditionnel à la main. Les motifs sont cousus au point zigzag ou autre, tout autour du motif, en piquant à la fois dans le tissu et dans l'étoffe de fond. Les bords coupés peuvent être rentrés, mais ce n'est pas nécessaire si le motif est temporairement fixé au tissu de base avec un entoilage thermocollant.

Machine appliqué is much faster than traditional hand appliqué. The appliqué shapes are cut out and sewn to the background fabric using a zigzag or satin stitch. The machine’s needle should catch both the appliqué fabric and the background fabric as you sew around your design. The shape’s raw edges can be turned under, but this is not necessary if you use a fusible web to adhere the appliqué fabric to the background fabric before sewing it.
