Tout est parti de deux challenges, un organisé par la délégation haut-marnaise de France Patchwork dont le thème est le triangle, et l'autre organisé par Cécile et Béa sur Facebook, sur le thème des étoiles. Triangles et étoiles vont a priori bien ensemble !
It's a special quilt to me, and one that required some thought and research to design.
It all started with two challenges, one organized by the Haute-Marne France Patchwork delegation, whose theme is the triangle, and the other one organized by Cécile and Béa on Facebook, on the theme of stars. Triangles and stars seem to go well together!

Dans un tableau Pinterest j'avais depuis longtemps épinglé le modèle d'étoiles de Violet Craft, Atomic Starburst. De longues étoiles très fines, en couture sur papier, j'adore !
In a Pinterest board, I had long ago pinned Violet Craft's star pattern, Atomic Starburst. Long, thin foundation paper pieced stars, I love it!

J'ai choisi la portion de ciel où on voit le Scorpion et la Croix du Sud, facilement repérables, avec entre les deux, l'Autel, le Loup, le Triangle Austral et le Centaure.
My project was to reproduce a portion of the Southern sky, a view of the constellations observed from Tahiti, French Polynesia. These are landmarks for astronavigation, and beautiful memories of nights in the Southern hemisphere.
I chose the part of the sky where you can see Scorpio and the Southern Cross, easily spotted, with the Altar, the Wolf, the Southern Triangle and the Centaur in between.

Voici Acrux, Mimosa, Delta Crucis et Gacrux. Non seulement ce sont leurs vrais noms, mais aussi leur couleur, attribuée en fonction de leur température et de leur type spectral. Aussi les bleues sont les étoiles les plus chaudes, les rouges sont froides, et entre deux il y a tout un dégradé de couleurs.
Leur taille est liée à leur magnitude, qui correspond à leur éclat tel qu'on le perçoit.
Je vous avais dit que ce quilt avait demandé des recherches !
Les grandes étoiles font 3'' x 6'' (7,6 cm x 15,2 cm), et les petites 3'' x 3''.
Here are Acrux, Mimosa, Delta Crucis et Gacrux. Not only are their real names, but also their color, assigned according to their temperature and spectral type. So blue is the hottest star, red is cold, and in between there is a whole gradation of colors.
Their size is related to their magnitude, which corresponds to their perceived brightness.
I told you that quilt needed research!
The large stars are 3'' x 6'' (7.6 cm x 15.2 cm), and the small ones are 3'' x 3''.
Après réflexion et plusieurs tests sur papier, j'ai choisi un motif de quilting de petites étoiles pour la Voie lactée, avec un fil gris clair pour qu'elle ressorte. Le reste du ciel est quilté avec de longues lignes courbes, et les étoiles sont toutes entourées d'un écho.

After some thought and several tests on paper, I chose a quilting design of small stars for the Milky Way, with a light grey thread to make it stand out. The rest of the sky is quilted with long wavy lines, and the stars are all echo quilted.
Pour la finition, je ne voulais rien de visible. Je n'ai plus assez de tissu étoilé pour une bande de finition, et du coup la meilleure option était le facing.
For the finish, I didn't want anything visible. I don't have enough star fabric for a binding, so the best option was a facing.
Des angles nets, bien carrés.
