Modern Bargello, Huahine 🎼, Dust off 📚

Today: music, a story, a challenge, a book, all in one quilt!

⭐⭐🔎⭐⭐

For the 4th year in a row, I'm participating in Beaquilter's Dust Off a Quilt Book challenge, and with her authorization, I invited non-bloggers French quilters to join me.

⭐⭐📖⭐⭐

The idea is simple: pick a book that's been sitting on our shelves gathering dust, and make a project out of it. The older the book, the better!

Sue H. Rodgers. Trapunto: The handbook of Stuffed Quilting

I have had this book for 20 years. I've flipped through it many times and closed it again.
Thanks to Bea and her challenge, this is the year I won't close the book without doing something with it! I love the idea of trapunto, boutis and all the other stuffing techniques that give a quilt even more texture and volume.
And I have just THE perfect quilt for this technique 😊

⭐⭐🎵⭐⭐

I started this quilt in 2020. The top was done, only the quilting was left. I had a few ideas, but nothing exciting, and then other easier projects in progress... Anyway, good excuses for not getting started!
Modern Bargello, Huahine

Pourquoi 8 bandes, pourquoi cet ordre, pourquoi ce nom ?

Why 8 stripes, why this order, why this name?

⭐⭐🧶⭐⭐

It's those negative spaces at the top and bottom that I wanted to quilt in a special way. I made lots of projections back in 2020, without really focusing on any of them. And when the Dust off a Quilt Book Challenge was announced, while flipping through Sue Rodgers' book, that's when it clicked: but yes, an embossed element reminiscent of the music theme! That's what this quilt needs, because the music theme is far from obvious at first glance.
Highly motivated, I searched on the Internet for all the elements that can be put on a music score. In the middle of all these more or less known signs, more or less weird (I remind you that I'm not a musician !) I finally decided to stick to a simple note, two linked eighth notes: 🎵.
For two reasons: because it's a sign that everyone recognizes as music, and because technically it's much easier to do than a treble clef for example.

Now the technique.
I followed faithfully Sue Rodgers' instructions, using the materials available in my quilting studio: unbleached knitting yarn and the longest needle I could find (2 inches long).
First, untwist the plies to reduce the diameter, and the stretch. Then, on the backing, fill the spaces with the yarn. The hardest part is knowing when to stop!
Before I started, I hesitated to use red yarn or wool that was darker than the unbleached one, so that the stuffing would be more visible by creating a shadow. But I'm happy with my subdued yarn.
And there it is, a well-stuffed note, with a nice relief:

Yeah, those eighth notes added just that little bit of interest to the white space. Perfect. Sometimes you have to set something aside until the right finishing element presents itself.

Bon week-end.

Excellent book to dust off. I happen to be contemplating doing some trapunto myself soon. I've shied away from it. Your connected 8th notes have reinforced my choice. You did a fabulous job.

What a great finish and a great way to be inspired by a dusted off book. I love the old hand techniques and am always drawn to them. You did a fabulous job.
Ah fantastic!!! I love how you let this hop push you to pull a book of something you've planned forever and DID it! I have so many things I've "always wanted to do"--so many that it's starting to wear on me and lately I keep thinking this has to stop! I need to DO these things! ANYhoo, I love your quilt and how you worked in the trupunto. It's just beautiful and I bet you look upon it with great satisfaction and finally doing it! Well done!
