Vieux livre / Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop 📚

The challenge with old forgotten books is back!

Today, and for a second year, is my day on the hop for "Dust off A Quilt Book" Blog Hop Challenge hosted by Bea at Beaquilter.
The idea is to find an old quilt book on my shelf and make something from it.
Last year, I had chosen an old book from 1974 to make Up North. This year, it's the turn of Patchwork from Mosaics by Helen Fairfield, published in 1985.

"Patchwork from Mosaics: Patchwork from the Stones of Venice", est un livre de motifs inspirés des sols en pierre italiens.

"Patchwork from Mosaics: Patchwork from the Stones of Venice", is a book of patterns inspired by Italian stone floors.

On page 29, there is this beautiful pattern, Trefoil.

I looked up the translation for Trefoil, which means clover. Yes, but for me, the English word is clover, or shamrock. So what are the differences, why 3 words?
Well, actually:
- A clover is a plant of the genus Trifolium
- A shamrock is a young clover
- A trefoil is a more generic term, which refers to any plant of the pea family with compound and trifoliate leaves, including clover. It is also a term from Gothic architecture, a symbol having the shape of such leaves.
Ok, let's go for Trefoil 🍀

In the book, indications are given to piece the pattern, but I preferred to make it with the foundation paper piecing to have a rather small pattern. I chose a white, a light yellow and a dark yellow fabric to have the 3 values.

For the assembly, I followed the indications of the book, and sewed the triangles in columns. Each triangle is 2 1/2'' (6 cm) wide.

Then I removed the paper, and squared to have a rectangle.

In my stash I have this golden-brown chevron fabric, it will be perfect for the backing!

A very simple quilting, to make pop up the trefoils. I put 2 layers of polyester batting for more volume.

A better photo with natural light!
A pale yellow bias to finish the set, and voilà!
This mini is 9'' x 7'' (approximately 23 cm x 18 cm).

A suivre 😋

The points are not perfect, but I like my mini quilt (a mug rug rather!). It's tempting to make a bigger one, with the pattern bigger too, so that the intersections will be more accurate. To be continued 😋

I can't even imagine being able to keep that all straight! I would have sewn the wrong pieces many times I am sure. Wonderful interpretation.

I am familiar with the term trefoil. We used a similar figure in Girl Scouts. I love that design. But it sure makes me feel old to hear that 1985 is considered old. Sigh. But in design, I can see it.

I've seen this book and was quite tempted to make quilts that duplicate mosaics, but I didn't actually do it. Good for you for making it. This is so beautiful. I too am making a white and yellow quilt so it was especially nice to see that too. Love the way your quilt looks dimensional.

This looks like a great book and the pattern you chose is awesome. Your mini is super cute in yellow and it would look great as a large quilt too!
While this larger version is lovely, my favorite is the tiny one you made for the 2021 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge!!

A very fun finish!
So pretty. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down last week. Sorry about the delay.
