I made this baby quilt, and it was gifted. I can show it to you now!
The background is a set of strips of different grays (a Jelly Roll), sewn together. The top stayed at this stage for a long time, more than 3 months while I thought about how I wanted it to look. And also waiting for the colors chosen by the parents for the baby's room!
And then finally everything came together, I got inspired again and found all the elements I would need to build the top.
First the branch, on which the little family of owls will be placed. Very practical the light table! The branch is drawn on iron-on transparency.
A few tests later, this is where the branch will be positioned. I machine stitched it, a very tight zigzag stitch (but not quite satin stitch) all around.
Once it's on, it's time to get busy with the owls.
Placement test of the owls. They are not finished yet, the eyes are missing, but the big pieces are in place. I had started by hand sewing (needle turn appliqué) the green pieces on the mama owl, but the result was not very happy. My hand sewing is quite rusty! So everything is ironed on, and it's much nicer 😋
As a result, even the whole owls are ironed. First try with the green one, but it wrinkles a bit on the front. I'm also afraid that it will be a bit stiff when appliqued on the background.
Hmmmm...
It's not easy to glue the fusble web perfectly everywhere, the wings and the belly are thick. Hence the wrinkles on the front. Hmmmm...
For dad owl and baby owl, another strategy: fusible web only on the edges. It's a good thing baby owl is drawn in the scraps of daddy owl 😊
All the owls can then be appliqued to the branch. Next, it's the leaves' turn. I love these two green fabrics! Three leaf shapes, arranged all over the place. Iron-on too, just like everyone else! 🍃
Machine applied, again with a small zigzag stitch: 1.5 x 1.2 on my sewing machine.
Brown thread for the branch, green for mom owl, pink for baby owl, purple for dad owl. And of course green for the leaves. There are 2 green threads, first because I'm not sure there is enough of this thread that match these fabrics, and also because I really like this other thread, variegated, a pretty shiny thread.
With all those individual pieces, that's a lot of threads to bury! I don't use backstitches, I prefer a discreet knot to layered stitches.
I loved making these appliqués by machine! While sewing, I remembered the tips I'd read here and there on blogs, about points and other ends to appliqué nicely by turning at the right time, and sticking the needle in the right place. After sewing 20 leaves, I think I know how to stitch some nice tips now!
I didn't hesitate much before choosing this yellow fabric for the border. I think it gives the whole thing a little bit of sunshine.
And for the backing, I had this cute owl fabric in my stash:
A binding with the same yellow fabric as the border, sewn by hand the day before offering the quilt to baby Elliana! 👶
