Comment coudre une courbe à la machine ?

How to machine sew curves?

Il existe de nombreuses façons de coudre une courbe, à la main ou à la machine. Pour en avoir testé plusieurs, voici celle que je préfère, et qui fonctionne bien même avec de toutes petites courbes (sur un carré de 5 cm, ou 2'').

There are many ways to sew a curve, by hand or machine. Having tested several of them, here is the one I prefer, and which works well even with very small curves (on a 5 cm, or 2'' square).

Préparer le matériel : 

Prepare the material:

- un fer à repasser et du freezer paper : papier à congélation qui a un côté brillant et un côté mat. Le côté brillant se colle sur le tissu au fer chaud, se retire et se repositionne de très nombreuses fois

- an iron and freezer paper: paper that has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side can be stuck on the fabric with a hot iron, removed and repositioned many times

- une paire de ciseaux pour cranter une des courbes

- a pair of scissors to notch one of the curves

- de la colle textile en bâton

- textile glue sticks

- un crayon de papier

- a pencil

- plateau de coupe, règle et cutter rotatif pour équerrer le bloc.

- cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter to square the block.

Couper des pièces ① et ② dans le freezer paper, sans marge de couture. 

Marquer un repère au centre de chacune des pièces

Cut pieces ① and ② into the freezer paper, without seam allowance. 

Trace a marker in the center of each of the pieces

Couper les 2 pièces, marges de couture comprises 👆

Cut the 2 pieces, seam allowance included 👆

Coller au fer chaud les gabarits en freezer papaer ① et ②, sur l'endroit du tissu

Stick freezer paper templates ① and ② on the right side of the fabric with a hot iron.

Cranter la courbe concave du ②, jusqu'à 3 ou 4 mm du papier

Clip into the concave seam allowance of ②, up to 1/8'' from the paper

Avec le fer chaud, rabattre la marge de couture crantée sur l'envers,

en guidant le tissu le long du papier

With the hot iron, fold the notched seam allowance toward the wrong side,

guiding the fabric along the paper.

Si le pli ne se marque pas bien, utiliser un pinceau pour l'humidifier et repasser

If the fold does not mark well, use a small brush to moisten it and iron

Préparer le bâton de colle...

Prepare the glue stick...

... et l'appliquer sur la marge de couture du ①

... and apply to the seam allowance of ①

Aligner les repères de centre (trait), puis ajuster les côtés de ② pour le positionner 

le long du papier ①

Align the center marks (line), then adjust the sides of ② to position it 

along the paper ①.

Appuyer quelques secondes pour que la marge adhère bien,

puis retirer délicatement les papiers

Press for a few seconds so that the margin adheres well,

then gently remove the freezer paper

Pour une meilleure visibilité, j'aime bien marquer le pli avec un crayon

For better visibility, I like to mark the fold with a pencil

Régler la longueur du point de la machine à 1.5

Set the stitch length of the machine to 1.5

Et c'est parti ! 

Coudre sur le trait, dans le pli, lentement. 

Au fur et à mesure, aiguille plantée dans le tissu, relever le pied pour faire pivoter la courbe, et disposer le tissu ① pour toujours voir le trait au crayon

And here we go! Sew on the line, in the fold, slowly.

As you go along, needle down in the fabric, raise the foot to rotate the curve, and arrange fabric ① to always see the line in pencil.

Et voilà !

And voilà!

Repasser délicatement la courbe en la rabattant d'abord au centre, puis sur les côtés

Gently press the curve, first in the center, then on the sides

La courbe est faite !

It's done!

Il ne reste plus qu'à équerrer le bloc, la ligne diagonale de la règle

sur le repère de centre du gabarit

Square the block, the diagonal line of the ruler on the center mark of the template

Pour finir le bloc, couper la marge de couture de la courbe à 5 mm

To finish the block, trim the seam allowance of the curve to 1/4''

Répéter autant de fois que nécessaire 😋

Repeat as many times as necessary 😋
