Carrés hongrois / Hungarian square tutorial ⏹

Comment réaliser un bloc carré hongrois.
How to make a Hungarian square block.

4 1/2'' square, 4'' finished square.

Pour réaliser un carré hongrois, il faut :
For one Hungarian square, you'll need the following materials:

  • Cut (1) 8'' square of background fabric
  • Cut (1) 2'' square of contrasting fabric (print or solid)
  • Embroidery cotton of the same color as the small square

Réalisation :
To assemble:

Tracer les repères / Draw the marks

Draw the marks A and B on the right side of the large square:
with a thin pencil, mark point A in the middle of the first side, then draw a mark B 3/4'' from the left corner. Repeat on the other 3 sides of the square.

Plier le carré / Fold the square

- Pinch the fabric at A,
- put your finger between A and B,
- and pull A over your finger to B to overlap the 2 marks.
Pin, and do the same for the other 3 sides.
The center will almost fall into place by itself once all 4 sides are pinned. Fold it over to form a raised diamond shape.
Pin to hold flat.

Coudre le long des pliures / Sew along the folds

About 1/16'' inside the fold: sew with small running stitches (or machine decorative stitch) along the folds, with a cotton thread matching the color of the small square.

Poser le carré central / Place the central square

On the central diamond, place the 2'' square, and fold the edges of the diamond on this small square.

Coudre les rabats / Sew the flaps

Coudre les bords rabattus à petits points invisibles.
Sew the folded edges with small invisible stitches.

  5. Beautiful work! The center looks like a cathedral window. The folds and stitches to the outside edges of the fabric add a new dimension. Thank you for sharing in my linky party ... :) Pat

    1. Hi! The template is designed for a 8'' square. Reduce the pattern to 4 1/2 and you will find A in the middle at 2 1/4 from the side, and mark B from the opposite side at 7/16 (1 13/16 between A and B). Have fun folding and stitching the Square!
