J'ai continué dans les éléments texturés pour le tapis d'éveil : un carré de polaire traversé par divers fils doux et amusants à toucher pour éveiller les sens de bébé.
I continued with textured elements for the play mat: a square of fleece covered with various soft threads that are fun to touch, stimulating baby's senses.
The idea for this square came to me because of this yellow fleece 👇. I didn't have enough left over for a 12.5" (32 cm) square, so the solution was to cut strips and insert fabric to increase the surface area. This is a classic patchwork technique, except that I wasn't going to sew fabric, but ribbons and other threads.
I prepared all the ribbons, wool, and soft, thick threads that I had bought especially for this project, which were patiently waiting their turn to be added to this play mat.
Here are the materials used for this square: I found this beautiful purple spiked ribbon and fur ribbon 👇 at La Mercerie in Montpellier, a real gold mine! 
J'ai testé une chaînette au crochet avec la laine chenille rose (voir la photo plus haut ☝), puis quelques mailles tricotées en point mousse 👇
No, definitely not. The needles are too thin for this wool, the cable is stiff and not soft enough for my taste. While looking for my auxiliary knitting needles to make the cables, I found a ball of wool that I thought I had lost.
It's been a while since I last knitted (the last time was to make a jacket... oh dear, it's not even finished yet!!) and I had to look up how to do a small right-leaning cable stitch 😜
Je le note ici pour mémoire, pour le 2e tapis d'éveil que je ferais (il y a 2 naissances prévues bientôt dans la famille) :
I started sewing the largest pieces first 👇. The fur thread braid is quite impressive, but everything went well. Neither the needle (which disappears completely!) nor the foot got caught, which shows just how soft this yarn is!
Le tricot se coud très bien aussi 👇, les points disparaissent dans la laine. J'ai hésité à le coudre par-dessus la polaire plutôt que comme une bande de tissu, mais je n'avais pas non plus envie de couper la polaire.
Il a rejoint le tapis d'éveil, qui commence à bien se remplir. Le morceau de polaire jaune accroché sur le carré noir est là juste pour me rappeler que c'est le prochain élément à faire !

L'idée de ce carré m'est venue à cause de cette polaire jaune 👇. Il ne m'en restait pas assez pour un carré de 12,5'' (32 cm) et la solution était d'en couper des bandes et d'intercaler de la matière pour augmenter la surface. Opération classique en patchwork, sauf que je n'allais pas ajouter du tissu dans les coutures mais des rubans et autres fils.
J'ai préparé tous les rubans, laines, fils doux et épais que j'avais acheté exprès pour ce projet, et qui attendaient sagement leur tour pour être installés sur ce tapis d'éveil.

Voilà le matériel utilisé pour ce carré : j'ai trouvé ce magnifique ruban à picots violet et ce ruban fourrure 👇 à La Mercerie à Montpellier, une mine d'or !
J'avais prévu initialement de les coudre entre les carrés au montage du tapis, mais ils vont trop bien sur le jaune vif de la polaire !
I had originally planned to sew them between the squares when assembling the play mat, but they look so good on the bright yellow fleece!
En parcourant Internet, j'avais déjà vu cette laine chenille bouclée 👆 cousue sur du tissu et je croyais qu'il fallait faire soi-même les boucles 😬! D'où la grosse pelote de fil chenille Doudou rose 👇
Je l'ai trouvée tout à fait par hasard, comme quoi la sérendipité ça a du bon 😋
While browsing the internet, I had already seen this curly chenille yarn 👆 sewn onto fabric, and I thought I had to make the curls myself 😬! Hence the big ball of pink Doudou chenille yarn 👇
I found it completely by chance, which just goes to show that serendipity has its good points 😋
Mais j'avais déjà acheté cette pelote de laine chenille de DMC et surtout, cet incroyable gros fil noir Polar Extreme de Katia. Il est hyper doux et on n'a qu'une envie, c'est de plonger les doigts dans la pelote encore et encore 😍
J'en ai fait une chaînette au crochet : gros crochet n°12, encore un peu petit pour cette laine mais en crochetant lâche ça va.
But I had already bought this ball of DMC chenille yarn and, above all, this amazing thick black Polar Extreme yarn from Katia. It's super soft and you just want to keep running your fingers through the ball over and over again 😍
I made a crochet chain with it - using a large size 12 hook, which is still a little small for this yarn but it works if you crochet loosely.
I tried out a crochet chain with pink chenille yarn (see photo above ☝), then a few stitches knitted in garter stitch 👇
Mmmm, no, I don't like it. The only knitting needles I have are thin, this yarn is knitted too tightly and is so crushed that it loses all its softness.
Mmmm, non, ça ne me plaît pas. Les seules aiguilles à tricoter que j'ai sont fines, cette laine est tricotée trop serré et est tellement écrasée qu'elle en perd toute sa douceur.
Peut-être un motif plus volumineux que le point mousse ? Tentons les torsades :
Maybe a pattern that's more voluminous than garter stitch? Let's try cables:
Non décidément, les aiguilles sont trop fines pour cette laine, la torsade est raide et pas assez douce à mon goût. En cherchant mes aiguilles à tricoter auxiliaires pour faire les torsades, j'ai retrouvé une pelote de laine que je croyais avoir perdu.
Un beau rouge vif et une douceur veloutée. Et un fil plus fin.

Ca fait un moment que je n'ai plus tricoté (la dernière fois c'était pour faire une veste... ah mince, elle n'est même pas terminée !!) et il a fallu que je recherche comment faire une petite torsade croisée à droite 😜
Torsade croisée à droite sur 10 mailles (multiple de 8 mailles + 2 mailles)
1er rang : 2 mailles envers, 6 mailles endroit, 2 mailles envers
2e rang : 2 m. end., 6 m. env., 2 m. end.
3e rang : 2 m. env., glisser 3 m. sur une aiguille auxiliaire derrière, 3 m. end., tricoter les 3 m. end. de l’aiguille auxiliaire, 2 m. env. 4e rang : 2 m. end., 6 m. env., 2 m. end.
Répéter du rang 1 au rang 4. La torsade terminée fait environ 38 cm (15'') de long.
I'm noting this here for future reference, for the second play mat I'll be making (there are two births coming up soon in the family):
right cross twist over 10 stitches (multiple of 8 stitches + 2 stitches)
1st row: 2 purl stitches, 6 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches
2nd row: 2 knit stitches, 6 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches
3rd row: 2 purl stitches, slip 3 stitches onto a cable needle behind, 3 knit stitches, knit the 3 stitches on the cable needle, 2 purl stitches.
4th row: 2 knit stitches, 6 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches.
Repeat rows 1 to 4. The finished twist is approximately 15'' (38 cm) long.
Tous les éléments sont ensuite alignés sur le carré de polaire et rangés du plus fin au plus épais. Alors oui, j'ai effectivement dit plus haut que je n'avais pas assez de polaire pour en faire un carré. Et c'est vrai ! J'ai juste racheté un coupon de polaire pour pouvoir simplement superposer les éléments et les coudre sur la polaire 😇

All the pieces are then lined up on the fleece square and arranged from thinnest to thickest. So yes, I did say earlier that I didn't have enough fleece to make a square. And that's true! I just bought another piece of fleece so I could layer the pieces and sew them onto the fleece 😇
J'ai commencé à coudre les éléments les plus gros en premier 👇. La tresse de fil fourrure est assez impressionnante, mais tout c'est bien passé. Ni l'aiguille (qui disparaît complètement !) ni le pied ne se sont accrochés, c'est dire comme cette laine est douce !
The knit fabric also works very well for sewing 👇, the stitches disappear into the yarn. I wasn't sure whether to sew it on top of the fleece rather than as a strip of fabric, but I didn't want to cut the fleece either.
Et voilà le bloc terminé ! Je ne coupe pas encore ce qui dépasse du carré, ce sera fait une fois que le bloc sera cousu aux autres.
And here is a finished block! I'm not squaring it yet; I'll do that once the block is sewn to the others.

He joined the play mat, which is starting to fill up nicely. The piece of yellow fleece hanging on the black square is there just to remind me that it's the next item to make!
Not much to report, I'm still recovering from the fatigue of the last few weeks. I still have three physical therapy sessions a week to continue regaining mobility in my shoulders (retractile capsulitis and subacromial impingement), and my job keeps me busy.
The move is finally complete, and the university library reopened on Monday, much to the delight of students and faculty (and my team too!). The fire extinguishers were installed yesterday, and after a week we are back up and running 👌
On the sewing front, I'm starting to think about the fabrics I'm going to use for the second play mat, and I've received some Baby Quilts that I'll show you soon.

🎯 Je garde le même objectif cette année : faire de la couture deux jours par semaine, au moins 15 minutes à chaque fois. Je participe ainsi à "Stitching Stuff", organisé par Kate.
C’est un rythme qui me semble raisonnable et qui s’adapte bien à mon travail, aux entraînements sportifs et aux imprévus du quotidien. Toute journée supplémentaire sera du bonus !
🚩⏩ Cette semaine j'ai cousu ① jour
Pas grand chose à signaler, je suis encore à récupérer de la fatigue des dernières semaines. J'ai toujours 3 séances de kiné par semaine pour continuer à retrouver la mobilité de mes épaule (une capsulite rétractile, et un conflit sous-acromial), et boulot bien prenant.
Le déménagement est enfin terminé, la bibliothèque universitaire a rouvert ce lundi au grand plaisir des étudiants et des formateurs (de mon équipe aussi !). Les extincteurs ont été posés hier et au bout d'une semaine nous sommes de nouveau opérationnels 👌
Côté couture, je commence à réfléchir aux tissus que je vais utiliser pour le 2e tapis d'éveil, et j'ai réceptionné des BB Quilts que je vous montrerais prochainement.

🎯 I'm sticking with the same goal this year: sewing two days a week, for at least 15 minutes each time. I'm taking part in "Stitching Stuff" organized by Kate. It's a pace that seems reasonable to me and fits in well with my work, sports training, and the unexpected events of everyday life. Any extra days will be a bonus!
