To prevent the bobbin thread from making ugly loops and knots on the back of the quilt - thread jamming - it's better to bring it to the front of the quilt, at the first stitch:

Make a stitch, put the needle back in the up position, move the quilt slightly to the side of the foot, and gently pull the thread that passes through the needle to pull the loop of the bobbin thread (the one that comes out of the quilt), and bring it all the way to the top.

Place the quilt under the needle exactly at the place of the first stitch, and sew the line keeping the 2 threads at the back of the needle.

To secure the seam without knotting the thread, at the beginning and end of each line, make 8 to 10 very small stitches (they must fit over a length of ¼ inch, or 5 mm).
Then return to a normal length: 10 to 12 stitches per inch.

In fact it is especially important to keep a constant stitch length throughout the quilt, straight and free motion stitching. As my stitches are not very large in free motion, I have to keep the same length for straight seams.
