Grille de fond / Background grid

Une grille de fond se coud en allers-retours, pour au moins 2 raisons :
A background grid has to be sew up and down, for at least 2 reasons:

1. La couture en alternance dans un sens puis dans l'autre permet de maintenir les 3 épaisseurs à plat, et éviter que le quilt ne se distorde ou fasse des plis.
Sewing alternatively in one way and in another way help to maintain the quilt lying flat and avoid bulks.

2. Pour coudre à la machine en continu, sans couper le fil à chaque fin de ligne.
It's much easier to machine quilt in continuous lines, and not to cut the thread at every line ending.

A moins d'utiliser une grille de fond sur l'ensemble du quilt, celle-ci ne se coud pas si simplement quand elle habille un bloc : il y aura certainement un motif, appliqué ou piécé, qu'il ne faudra pas quadriller avec le fond.
If you don't use the grid in the whole quilt, it's a little more tricky to sew it inside a block: there will be an appliqué or pieced design right in the middle, witch will not have to be quilted with the background.

Le but du jeu (oui ! oui ! le quilting est une affaire de jeu !) est de trouver le chemin continu le plus long possible, autour du motif, pour quadriller le bloc et éviter de couper le fil trop souvent.
The game (yes, quilting is a matter of game !) is to find the longuest continuous way around the design, to quilt the grid on the backgroung and avoid to cut the thread too often.


Voici un exemple, où le tour du motif peut être réalisé en 1 seule fois :

Pour faciliter les constantes rotations du quilt autour de l'aiguille et de la machine, j'utilise des pinces à vélo pour maintenir les 4 côtés du quilt enroulés, en ne laissant à découvert que le bloc à quadriller.
To help rotate the quilt around the neddle and the machine, I use bicycle clips to maintain the rolled sides of the quilt, and leave free only the block witch has to be grided. 

Coudre des lignes droites sans tracer sur le tissu :
How to sew strait lines without tracing on the fabric:

1. Scotch de peintre (bleu) de la largeur désirée, coudre de chaque côté puis retirer.
Masquing tape 1''-wide or the desire wide, sew along the edges, then take off.

2. Press'n Seal, quadriller le plastique au crayon de papier, coudre par dessus, puis retirer.
Press'n Seal, square the plastic sheet with a pencil, sew on the top, then peel off.

L'usage du scotch, ou du plastique transparent, permet de toujours garder le motif appliqué ou piécé visible, et donc de pouvoir l'éviter dans le processus de quadrillage.
Using tape or plastic see-throu help to keep an eye on the appliquéd or pieced design, and avoid it when quilting the grid.
