Manchon de suspension / Hanging sleeve (1/2)

Un petit quilt peut facilement être suspendu à un mur, comme un tableau. Pour cela, il suffit de prévoir un gousset au dos, et y insérer par la suite une tringle.
If you plan to hang your quilt on the wall, you will need to add a hanging sleeve to the back.

1ère méthode : ajout du gousset avant la finition du patchwork

First method: add a hanging sleeve before binding

Cette méthode permet d'obtenir une fixation plus résistante, mais vous ne pourrez plus retirer le manchon une fois cousu en place, sous le biais de finition. C'est cette méthode que j'ai utilisé pour mon quilt Feather. 

This method provides a stronger fastening, but you will not be able to remove the sleeve once it is sewn in place, under the binding. I used this method for my Feather quilt.

Voilà ce que ça donne.

Here is the result :

1 - préparer le quilt pour la finition : vérifier qu’il soit bien rectangulaire, et que les angles soient à 90°.

Prepare the quilt for binding: square it with a square ruler on the corners.

2 - découper une bande de 7'' (18 cm) de large, et 1/2'' (1,5 cm) plus courte que la largeur du quilt, dans le même tissu que celui du dos.

Cut a strip 7’’ wide, and 1/2’’ shorter than the finished width of the quilt, in the same fabric used for the backing.

3 - faire un ourlet aux extrémités : retourner 5 mm de chaque côté de la bande, repasser. Retourner encore 5 mm, repasser, et coudre à points droits l’ourlet.

Turn under 1/4’’ at each end, and press. Turn under again, press, and straight stitch the hem.

4 - plier la bande en 2 dans le sens de la longueur, envers contre envers, et repasser.

Fold the strip in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, press.

5 - centrer le gousset et l’épingler en ras du bord, au dos du quilt..

Center the sleeve and pin it to the back of the quilt, lining up the raw edges of the sleeve and the quilt.

6 - bâtir à la machine à 5 mm du bord.

Machine baste in place with a 1/4’’ seam

7 - coudre le biais de finition tout autour du quilt..

Bind the quilt.

8 - coudre à points invisibles le bas du manchon au dos du patchwork, à travers le tissu du dos et le molleton : remonter d’environ 1 cm la ligne de repassage du fond du gousset sur le devant. Cela permet de détendre le gousset, et éviter que la tringle ne déforme le patchwork.

Hand blindstitch the lower edge of the sleeve to the quilt back, into the backing and the batting: with the pressed line on the bottom of the sleeve as a guide, bring the edge up about 1/2’’. This allows a dowel to be placed in the sleeve without distorting the quilt.
